My Current Favorites

Statement Necklace Black and Gold - Art Deco Inspired // Lightweight 3-in1 Accessory - Can also be worn as a headband & a chain headpiece

Yes, I made this piece myself. But, if I am unable to make it myself & see it in a shop, I’d purchase the piece in a heartbeat.

Although it’s a piece of a chainmaille jewelry, it doesn’t look like most chainmaille jewelry other people make.

I always chain maille technique to create contemporary-looking pieces that go together with the items I purchase from my favorite shops (such as Revolve Clothing, Saks Fifth Avenue, & Shopbop – I’m listing them alphabetically because I love them equally). I tend also wear the handmade accessories I create together with other designers’ pieces (my current & long time favorites include the timeless & dramatic pieces by Kenneth Jay Lane, Gorjana, House of Harlow 1960, & CC Skye).

You can say that most of my chain maille jewelry look like “mainstream” non-artisan jewelry, but that’s just the way I like it.

Let me tell you why I love this piece.

This necklace can complete many kinds of outfits. I’ve been wearing it at many different occasions. I wore it with Theory business suits, with my casual weekend clothes (usually, a black Only Hearts cami, a long cardigan, and either a pair of my favorite jeans, a mini skirt + opaque tights, or a pair of Nike Tempo Shorts), with various little black dresses, & with a simple strapless maxi dress.

In this photo shoot, I paired the necklace with a Jen’s Pirate Booty mini dress (available at Revolve Clothing). I love this piece because I can wear it in many different ways:

  • On the shoulders
  • Off the shoulders [like this]
  • On one- shoulder [see below]
  • Strapless [see above]

You can wear this piece of jewelry in several different ways as well:

  • As a statement necklace
  • As a chain headpiece (the across the forehead kind)
  • As a headband

Like most other pieces of jewelry I create, this 3-in-1 piece is extremely lightweight. Sometimes, I even forget that I’m wearing them.

Anyway, this piece happens to be a part of a “capsule collection” which include:

  • A pair of (lightweight) dangling earrings
  • A coordinating bracelet
  • A cocktail ring
  • Another piece of dramatic necklace

Not so trendy, I know . . . but I want to be able to move freely, do whatever I need to do, or even sit on the floor if I need to.

All of them are knitwear & very stretchy.

(All of them are machine-washable as well)

In days like this, I want to concentrate on the things I need to do, and not the things I wear.

Only Hearts tank top – I buy them by the dozens, especially when I can use good promo codes/coupons.

A good place to find promo codes: http://www.retailmenot.com

Riller & Fount cocoon cardigan – Super comfy & easy to mix-n-match. I bought them (several years ago) from one of my favorite online shops: Revolve Clothing.

~0o0~

BCBG bandage skirt – Machine-washable, available in SO many colors, and much cheaper than Herve Leger (also by Max Azria). I usually buy them in one size too large so I can move freely in them.

Splendid leggings – I bought them many years ago (from my other favorite online shop: Shop LA Style), but they’re still good. I only buy high quality (thus reliable) leggings. Whenever I’m super busy, I =don’t have enough time to inspect them> I don’t want to discover – when it’s too late – that the leggings have some holes on them, etc etc.

Ugg Boots

Ugg Boots – I bought this pair from Zappos in 2005 (7 years ago~). Apart from the discoloration (which I actually like), the boots are still in good condition.

Sometimes, I like to roll the top parts of the boots down. They look cuter this way.

Actually I also wore a bracelet I made using a jewelry-making kit I purchase in Japan a few months ago.

The leopard print thingy you see on my wrist is actually a hair elastic. I bought them from Planet Beauty. It also lasts for years.

As for the statement necklace, it’s made by me and available  in my Etsy shop.

Tomorrow, I probably will wear a very similar outfit . . . an identical tank top, identical leggings, the same boots, a similar skirt (in different color), a similar cardigan, and so on.

I’ve been making these bracelets in SO many different colors these days (12 colors & counting!).

The chain maille weave is called Beaded Gridlock Byzantine. It’s invented by Rebeca Mojica, and a pdf tutorial of it is available in http://www.bluebuddhaboutique.com/b3/projects/Beaded-Gridlock-Byzantine

As I said in my previous posts, I make new chainmaille jewelry any chance I get. In fact, there are days when I chainmaille for 18 hours a day … Sounds a bit manic, doesn’t it? But, a piece like this necklace (below) takes more than 50 hours to create … And once I start creating something, only extreme exhaustion, previous commitments, & natural disasters can make me to take a break from completing the piece.

But, it’s more than just a compulsion. It’s the joy of creating beautiful things, of bringing them into the world, is what keep me going.

Many chainmaillers find chainmailling therapeutic. Many of them say that chainmailling help them to relax. Some of them compare it to knitting … how the rhythmic & repetitive movements calm them down etc etc … things that are akin to the things described/explained by this online article >>> http://www.knitonthenet.com/issue4/features/therapeuticknitting/

I, on the other hand, am not too crazy about anything too repetitive. So, I tend to keep my mind occupied when I chainmaille: I either chat with my friends or family or listen to audiobooks. There are a few classics (e.g. Jane Austen, Thackeray) that I re-listen every once in a while. But, more often than not, I listen to the latest legal thrillers, police procedurals, detective stories, & several different offbeat stories :D

Anyway, it doesn’t mean that I don’t LOVE creating chainmaille jewelry.

As a matter of fact, I’ve tried several other jewelry-making techniques … but I decided to stick with chainmailling.

Why?

  1. It does not require me to use any toxic chemicals, dangerous equipments, dyes, & fixatives. And, since I prefer to use professionally made jump rings, I don’t need to cut & toss things away. So, it’s almost completely mess-free!!!
  2. Chainmaille jewelry aren’t difficult to alterresize. If I happen to dislike an aspect of my design, I don’t need to start over. [Unlike, for example, metal casting, soldering, & wire-wrapping] I can easily remove/extend/shorten/etc the part I don’t like and it won’t take me forever to do it.
  3. If I make some pieces I don’t like, I don’t need to throw them away. I can reuse their parts to create my next jewelry samples . (Less waste).
  4. I prefer my jewelry bold, chunky, sturdy, but not too uncomfortable to wear. This bold, dramatic, & chunky anodized aluminum chainmaille bracelet below, for example, is lighter than 2 tablespoons of sugar. No other materials & jewelry-making techniques can give me similar results.

These beaded gridlock byzantine bracelets, however, are made using (naturally distressed – with lemon juice & sea salt solution)  jewelry brass.

The metal contains some copper, so it’s not as hypoallergenic as my other bracelets, and approximately 3 times heavier.

How I Create This Type of Knotted Chainmaille + Swarovski Statement Necklaces

handmade jewelry statement necklace chainmaille jewellery chain maille chain mail chainmail knotted swarovski fancy stone black gold angelica brigade angelicabrigade etsy indie designer bold sculptural unusual unique
~0o0~

STEP 1:  Coating my pliers with 2 thin layers of ToolMagic to make sure that the jewelry I create is 100% free of toolmark &/or scratch

STEP 2: Sorting the jump rings. (I set the imperfect jump rings aside and use only them when I am learning a new chainmaille weave).

STEP 3: Pre-closing the black anodized aluminum jump ringsas neatly as possible.

STEP 4: Opening the gold anodized aluminum jump rings.

STEP 5: Weaving the jump rings. (This weave is called box chain. I learned this weave from Rebeca Mojica’s  Book: Chained, but you can learn it for free by watching this YouTube tutorial or reading this free online tutorial instead).

STEP 6: Continue weaving the jump rings till I create a 40-inch or 101-cm chain

STEP 7: Attaching the Swarovski Fancy Stones and Knotting the ChainMaille

And yes … the 40″ or 101 cm chain only forms the center front part of the necklace

STEP 8: Deciding the length of the necklace

STEP 9: Create two more handwoven links (by repeating step 2 – 5) , twisting & linking them onto the center front part of the statement necklace, and connecting the ends of those links to a toggle clasp.

Ring counts: Approx. 20 rings per inch.

Thus, to create this type of statement necklace, I need to use more than 1200 pieces of jump rings.

The time I need to create this type of necklace: More than 12 hours.

A unusual, dramatic, timeless, and elegant statement necklace.

Looks great with almost everything: tank top or t-shirt and jeans, business suit, cocktail dress, evening dress, you name it.

Made with meticulous attention to detail, one jump ring at a time.

Lightweight for its size (62 grams / 2.1 oz. /  0.13 lb. )

Adorned with Swarovski Crystal Pearls which are “perfect replica(s) of genuine pearls. They are similar in weight and behaviour, adjust to the temperature of the skin and are resistant to rubbing, scratching, perfume, perspiration and UV light. Above all, they are the first pearls in the world with a crystal core and an innovative, silky smooth pearl coating.” ( Source: http://www.create-your-style.com/Content.Node/swarovski-elements/Crystal-Pearls.en.php )

An original design by joyz*k from Angelica Brigade.

*******************************

IMPORTANT:
Each Swarovski Crystal Pearl has two (2) tiny (pin-sized) DRILL HOLES on them.

> > > Please look at pictures closely and see whether the drill holes makes you like the necklace less < < <

{ For example, on pic #1, the visible drill holes are on the 4th pearl from the left and the 2nd pearl from the right }

But . . . I love how the gleaming crystal pearls look with the chain. Plus, the people who saw me wearing this necklace do not notice the drill holes because they are hidden from view by the handmade chain. So, I decided to go ahead and create this necklace.

Currently, I’m in the process of researching and sourcing some materials (gemstones, crystals, handmade polymer clay beads) that can be good substitutes to the Swarovski crystal pearls.

Please see picture #1 closely and you can see those drill holes: one on the 4th pearl from the left & one on the 2nd pearl from the right.

*******************************

Style name: Gwynn

Length: Approx. 22″ (56 cm)

This necklace is finished with a gold-plated pewter (tin-based alloy) toggle clasp.

The color of the chain: Yellow gold, similar to 22 karat gold.
The color of the Swarovski crystal pearls: Gleaming Light Grey

Please remember that monitors with different calibrations might depict colors somewhat differently.

*******************************

Materials: Blue Buddha Boutique premium anodized aluminum jump rings, Swarovski Crystal Pearls, hammered pewter (tin-based) toggle clasp.

The composition of the jump rings:
Aluminum: 96.6 – 98.5%; Magnesium 1.5 – 2.1%; trace amounts of Chromium, Copper, iron, Manganese, Silicon, Titanium, Zinc

Maintenance:
The color of the chain can be scratched by harder metals,. Oils from your skin may change the colors. Some of the color can be restored by washing the piece in soap and water.

.:: talent is overrated ::. my design process .:: a day in life ::.

angelica brigade joyz*k joyz indie designer at work dalent is overrated a day in life chainmaille chain maille sample making prototype

Thousands of jump rings in various sizes strewn all over the table

Along with ribbons, Swarovski crystal pearls, strips of fabrics, metal findings

I know I’d been sitting here for hours

Using 3 different sets of pliers, I’ve been weaving the jump rings, taking them apart, changing the sizes of the jump rings I used, re-arranging the placements and the length of the chain, crystal pearls, and the ribbons . . . and I’m not even half done.

Out of sudden I felt lightheaded. My hands started to shake . . .

It was then when I realized that it was 7 pm, that I had been working for 10 hours, and that I had not eaten anything all day . . .

Quickly, I decided to whip something up really quick before things get even worse

And when I was waiting for the water to boil . . . I couldn’t stop myself from thinking out ways to improve the necklaces I’m creating today.

It’s not uncommon for me to keep on working till very early in the morning . . .

And the moment I wake up, after I have my morning coffee (with lots of rice milk & cocoa powder), I usually go right back to work

Yes, I know that it’s not a very healthy lifestyle. It’s not a lifestyle I’d recommend to anyone else. I also know that it’s in my best interest to live a more balanced life . . . But, at this moment, there is nothing I can do about it.

There are a few plans in the works and I’m on deadline . . . But it’s another story for another day :)

Many people told me how lucky I am that I find something I’m passionate about and how fun it must be creating all these jewelry and headpieces. If they actually see the kind of life I lead, will they still think so?

All these fumes I inhale and all these ash that I need to clean up whenever I create silk floral headpieces / hair fascinator

Once in a while I accidentally stab my fingers with a needle and burn my fingers

And then, there are these natural byproducts of one’s decision to stay seated on the same spot while doing the things that require one’s close attention to detail: back pain, neck pain, dry eyes

There are times when I get stuck and no matter how much I try the pieces either don’t fit together and do not look the way I envision them to be. It can be very frustrating.

Yet, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I am driven by this impulse to create. Plus, the satisfaction that comes with the completion of each project is incomparable.

It’s uncommon for me to work longer than 14 hours per day

And … because of that, there are moments when I feel that talent is overrated. It’s the hours I spend doing, re-doing, fixing, and improving my works are the reasons I acquire these skills

Have you read or read about Geoffrey Colvin’s book Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else ?

How about Malcolm Gladwells’ “Outliers” ?

Here are some good summaries of the books’ arguments:

– Why talent is overrated http://money.cnn.com/2008/10/21/magazines/fortune/talent_colvin.fortune/index.htm

– Malcolm Gladwell – Outliers: http://wiki.dandascalescu.com/summaries/Malcolm_Gladwell_-_Outliers

It takes about 10,000 hours for people to start to be really good ad something

True, I one of the reasons I like to create chainmaille jewelry is because it comes very naturally to me. If I happen not to be not good at it or if I happen to dislike doing it, I would never spend so many hours practicing, learning new weaves, and designing my own chainmaille jewelry. So, perhaps, passion and natural aptitude are parts of the mix … but if I never spend those hours making numerous pieces of chainmaille jewelry and fabric accessories,  experimenting with new materials and techniques, and trying to figure out how I can make a better piece next time … I would not be able to make the things I am able to make today.

If I don’t spend enough time re-working this piece, this headpiece will still look the way the 1st version looks like …

There are still a lot of rooms for me to improve. There are a lot of techniques I want to learn and incorporate.

Alas …  I’m not a super human and I do need to have some rest from time to time … How I wish there are more hours in a day

Anyway, look at the time!

I need to go back to work. I’m trying to finish creating these 2 new necklaces today. I will upload their pictures in a few days.

Angelica Brigade Knitted Maille Necklace Catrina

This is the bright aluminum version of the necklace I wrote about in my previous blog post (https://angelicabrigade.wordpress.com/2012/02/24/some-of-my-recent-works/ )

This necklace took me approx. 8 hours to create. It’s constructed using hundreds of saw-cut premium quality bright aluminum jump rings (which I got from http://www.bluebuddhaboutique.com) one ring at a time.

The bright aluminum jump rings are different from normal aluminum jump rings & they are very shiny.

To learn more about the jump rings I’m using, please feel free to check this site: http://www.bluebuddhaboutique.com/b3/faq/metals/difference-between-base-metals

The bright aluminum version of this necklace is much lighter than the bronze version.

On the other hand, the bronze version is stiffer than the bright aluminum one. Thus, the bronze version of this necklace looks more sculptural than the bright aluminum one.

Personally, I don’t really mind wearing a heavy necklace. But, I realize that it’s not for everyone.

Plus, bronze tends to oxidize quickly. So, when it’s not in use, it needs to be stored inside of a ziploc bag along with an anti-tarnish tab. The bright aluminum version, however, is much easier to maintain. All you need is to wash it with soapy water if it gets dirty.

(some) of my recent works

I haven’t blogged at all these past few days

I was bedridden and too ill to do most things

Thankfully, chainmailling kept me sane … otherwise, I would’ve been bored out of my mind

:)

Another Avant-Garde Maille Necklace

Right after I finished making the maille necklace I blogged about yesterday, I made another one …

I did not do it for an arbitrary reason, but to test whether the diagram (or the how-to instruction) I made while I was making the my first avant-garde maille necklace was clear, correct, and easy to follow.

The second avant-garde necklace looks similar to the previous one, but: 2-tone, bigger, and it’s main part is the mirror image of the previous one (to see how it looks like, please check this post https://angelicabrigade.wordpress.com/2012/01/15/avant-garde-statement-necklace-by-joyzk-for-angelica-brigade/ )

Bold & sculptural showstopper, but flexible & lightweight for its size (115 g / 0.25 lb)

Crystallized with Swarovski

Original design by joyz*k.

*******************************

This necklace is light for its size because it’s constructed using premium quality anodized aluminum jump rings.

This necklace has a magnetic clasp, but you can adjust the length of the necklace by twisting the strands before clasping it.

Maximum length: Approx. 19″ (48 cm)

*******************************

This glamorous and elegant necklace is constructed using more than one thousand premium quality anodized aluminum jump rings, handwoven and then twisted & knotted by me (joyz*k)

*******************************

The twisting & knotting process can be rather complicated. For that reason, I diagramed every step

*******************************

It took me hours to make

Right after I finished making this necklace, I made another one (in different color, different size, and the mirror image of this piece) to test whether the diagram I made is clear & accurate

I will post its picture tomorrow

The Countdown Begins

Hey Guys,

I know, according to my previous schedule, I am supposed to open my online store today. But, after a lot of thinking, I decided to open the store in November 11, 2011 instead. It’s not just because I like how the date or the numbers looks on paper (11.11.11) but also because I want to use this opportunity to build something I truly care about and see it grow. For that reason, I decided to start strong and present my creations professionally. It is time for me to put the things I learned in FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising ) into practice: branding (creating, developing and maintaining a brand identity), costing, designing, merchandising, and marketing.

Starting from today till November 11, 2011, I will blog and post numerous pictures on a daily basis to share with you the processes and that preparations that lead to the birth of Angelica Brigade (AvaNt-GardE Luxurious Inventions by Collaborative Artists Brigade).
