Moving towards a different direction: Creating simpler & more wearble pieces

Hey guys,

I listed two new bracelets on my Etsy shop today.

As you’ll see (below), these pieces are a lot simpler than my usual designs (such as this one).

They are also much more wearable in the sense that we can wear it pretty much anytime we want (even on a daily basis) with pretty much anything we want.

Timeless, aren’t they? They’ll never look dated, even a few years from now. And yes, they are lovingly-constructed to last for years.

Update (March 12, 2013): These bracelets are no longer available for sale)

Angelica Brigade’s New Studio

It’s tiny: Only 130 square feet (12 square meter) in size & located a few footsteps away from my living room.

To make the most of it, I asked a local carpenter to create ceiling-high cabinets (in glossy white) so I can make this home office to look clean & organized.

I keep the decor to a minimum:

  • Two of Jasmine Becket-Griffith‘s limited edition canvas prints
  • A vintage canvas hat with one of my handmade lurex flower headband on top of it
  • One of my handmade gigantic silk flower propped on top of an art-deco inspired vase
  • One of my handmade alternative bouquet (it can stand upright on its own – without any support whatsoever)
  • A floral & metal centerpiece I made for my wedding’s cocktail party, and . . .
  • A framed chalkboard

At the end of each day, I put everything inside of the cabinets to keep them clean & dust-free.

Everything has its own space. It makes it easier for me to find things.

According to the American Demographics Society, Americans waste 9 million hours a day looking for misplaced items.

To me, time is a luxury. And once we waste it, we can never recover it.

I also like to start each of my workday afresh. Plus, it’s easier for me to clean the table when there’s absolutely nothing on top of it.

This is how I make sure that each of my in-stock items are completely dust-free & stay pristine.

A Simple yet Fun ChainMaille Bracelet

Update (04/17/2916): Blue Buddha Boutique is closing its door permanently. The link to their website (below) is no longer active.

You can create this ChainMaille Bracelet in within 1 hour or less

What you need are a pair of pliers & some jump rings.

I used 16 gauge (1.6 mm) aluminum wire jump rings with 1/4″ (6.35 mm) inner diameter

You can either purchase some jump rings with 4.0 Aspect Ratio or make your own jump rings

And, if this piece is going to be your first chainmaille jewelry, learn how to open & close jump rings properly by reading my previous blog post

You can download the pdf tutorial here or follow the following tutorial (^_____^):

1. Decide your color scheme. (For first-timers: It’s easier to start with making a two-colored version of the bracelet first).

2. Open all of the jump rings in color A (in this tutorial: Red) & close all of the jump rings in color B (in this tutorial: Green)

3. Using a jump ring in color A (red), scoop 2 jump rings in color B (green)

4. Close the color A (red) jump ring

5. Hook another color A (red) jump ring onto the previous color A jump ring

6. Weave two color B jump rings (green) onto the open color A (red) jump ring

7. Close the color A (red) jump ring

8. Put the jump rings on top of your workspace and separate the color B (green)

9. Weave another color A (red) ring onto the previous color A ring right between the two color B (green) rings

10. Weave 2 Color B (green) rings onto the open Color A (red) ring; then close the Color A (red) ring.

11. To create a standard size bracelet, repeat steps 8 – 11 till you have a 7″ (17.75 cm) chain.

12. Then, find the first & the last Color A (red) rings. Use jump rings to attach a clasp onto the bracelet. Or, you can also use a ribbon instead.

And … that’s it!!!

It can make a pretty good holiday gift, don’t you think?

~0o0~

Note:

If you can’t find a 6.4mm cylindrical object [to coil the wire and create your jump rings], a slightly smaller or larger mandrel will do

We can’t create chainmaille jewelry using randomly selected jump rings.

If the jump rings you use is too small or too thick, you either can’t weave the rings through or the weave is going to be as stiff as a chopstick or a twig

On the other hand, if the rings you use are too thin or too large … the weave is going to be so loose that the links can’t hold its shape and when you wear it as jewelry, the links will definitely flop or look flattened

~0o0~

In the beginning, whenever I learned a new chainmaille weave, I used to need some time to figure out the ring sizes I need.

But, now, people who want to learn to create chainmaille jewelry do not need to go through a similar difficulty because – recently – Blue Buddha Boutique launched a number of chainmaille starter packs that simplify the process.

Every pack is different so you can start learning to make chainmaille jewelry by creating your favorite piece(s) & without having to purchase too many jump rings you might not need.

You can start by learning just one piece such as this one by using the All-in-One, Easy Start to Chainmaille Pack

The pack contains Euro Tool Ergo pliers coated with Tool Magic*, mini bead mat for holding your rings while you work, instructions (for right-handed & left-handed learners) and enough jump rings to create a Celtic Visions bracelet in the colorway(s) you prefer.

There are a few more exciting starter packs you might want to check out:

They can make great holiday gifts, don’t you think?

Curved Dragonscale Chainmaille Bracelet v.02

Curved Dragonscale Chain Maille Bracelet, An Unusual Chunky Chainmaille Cuff in Gold, Orange, & Brown

I’ll write more about it soon~

Chain Maille for Beginners

Update (04/17/2916): Blue Buddha Boutique is closing its door permanently. The link to their website (below) is no longer active.

Here’s my current teaching method:

  1. I will give you the basic principles.
  2. Then, I will show you some examples.
  3. Finally, I will show you how you can use the principles to design & create your own jewelry.

Ready?

~0o0~

What you might need:

  1. Jump rings*
  2. A pair of pliers*
  3. Wirecutters (only if you plan to make your own jump rings)
  4. Pen & Paper

[* Notes & tips at the bottom of this post. To find out which jump ring size(s) you need, please read my tutorial below ]

~0o0~

Wanna make your own chainmaille jewelry but not sure which where to start?

In my opinion, the first chainmaille weave you might want to master is the Japanese Weave.

It’s easy to figure out & very versatile.

It’s the only chainmaille weave I used to construct this necklace:

Angelica Brigade Handmade Chain Maille Jewelry Steampunk Brass Copper Necklace ChainMailler Jewellery Skeleton Key Tim Holtz Sprocket

The basic principle of this weave is:

2 jump rings … linked with 2 other jump rings … by 2 jump rings.

2 jump rings … linked with 2 other jump rings … by 2 jump rings

Okay, now, let’s bring it onto the next level:

The principle is still the same: 2 jump rings … linked with 2 other jump rings … by 2 jump rings

Add a few more links here & there, and this is what you might come up with:

Angelica Brigade handmade chain maille jewelry AngelicaBrigade chainmaille jewellery ring Japanese Weave

And … if you mix the the jump rings with other materials such as Swarovksi crystal oval rings, the weave is  going to look like this:

AngelicaBrigade Handmade Chain Maille Necklace Jewelry Fashion Jewelry Angelica Brigade swarovski statement necklace

If you look at the picture closely, you can see that the same principle still applies:

2 jump rings … linked with 2 other jump rings … by 2 jump rings

~0O0~

Now, let me show you how you can use the principle to design your own jewelry:

Start by sketching you design (in 1:1 scale) on a piece of paper. That way, you can see what jump ring size(s) you need, & how many.

One of the ways to do it is by linking them one jump ring at a time, but … if you want to finish making the piece a little faster, here’s what you might wanna do:

1.

Scoop 2 pre-closed jump rings (shown in black) with another jump ring (shown in gold):

and then close it (the gold jump ring).

2.

Double the gold jump ring by weaving it onto the black jump ring:

then, close that gold jump ring.

3.

Next, weave yet another gold ring through the black rings

4.

Weave 2 pre-closed black jump rings onto the gold jump ring (in this case, gold ring #3) before you close it.

5. Then, repeat steps 2 – 4 till you come up with the number of links you want.

Remember: 2 jump rings … linked with 2 other jump rings … with 2 jump rings

All I need to do now is to get a pair of ear wires & link the ear wires onto this handmade chain using the small jump ring I already attached on the top of this short chain.

I know, the design of this earring is not very attractive. So, let’s turn it into a necklace instead, shall we?

Simply repeat steps 2 – 4 till you have the length you want, then attach a toggle clasp at the ends of the chain using small jump rings:

Better?

If you like, you can embellish the chain with ready-made pendants or other jewelry findings.

The ones I used to create this piece are Tim Holtz‘s idea-ology World Keys and Sprocket Gears by available in JoAnn, Michaels, and (of course) Amazon.com.

~0o0~

Now, some notes on the jump rings & pliers.

If you are not sure that chainmailling is for you & don’t want to purchase some things you might never use again, you can start by making your own jump rings & borrowing a pair of flat-nose electrical pliers (not the huge ones, though) … or getting them from a hardware store with a good return policy.

Or … get a chance to WIN chainmaille starter packs [ courtesy of Blue Buddha Boutique ] via an online GIVEAWAY I will host on this blog (https://angelicabrigade.wordpress.com) this weekend (Friday, November 16, 2012). The giveaway is open to everyone (not just U.S. residents). So, please check back this Friday, or – to receive a reminder about the giveaway – please follow my blog via email.

Thanks, and have a great week~

I’ve been making these bracelets in SO many different colors these days (12 colors & counting!).

The chain maille weave is called Beaded Gridlock Byzantine. It’s invented by Rebeca Mojica, and a pdf tutorial of it is available in http://www.bluebuddhaboutique.com/b3/projects/Beaded-Gridlock-Byzantine

As I said in my previous posts, I make new chainmaille jewelry any chance I get. In fact, there are days when I chainmaille for 18 hours a day … Sounds a bit manic, doesn’t it? But, a piece like this necklace (below) takes more than 50 hours to create … And once I start creating something, only extreme exhaustion, previous commitments, & natural disasters can make me to take a break from completing the piece.

But, it’s more than just a compulsion. It’s the joy of creating beautiful things, of bringing them into the world, is what keep me going.

Many chainmaillers find chainmailling therapeutic. Many of them say that chainmailling help them to relax. Some of them compare it to knitting … how the rhythmic & repetitive movements calm them down etc etc … things that are akin to the things described/explained by this online article >>> http://www.knitonthenet.com/issue4/features/therapeuticknitting/

I, on the other hand, am not too crazy about anything too repetitive. So, I tend to keep my mind occupied when I chainmaille: I either chat with my friends or family or listen to audiobooks. There are a few classics (e.g. Jane Austen, Thackeray) that I re-listen every once in a while. But, more often than not, I listen to the latest legal thrillers, police procedurals, detective stories, & several different offbeat stories :D

Anyway, it doesn’t mean that I don’t LOVE creating chainmaille jewelry.

As a matter of fact, I’ve tried several other jewelry-making techniques … but I decided to stick with chainmailling.

Why?

  1. It does not require me to use any toxic chemicals, dangerous equipments, dyes, & fixatives. And, since I prefer to use professionally made jump rings, I don’t need to cut & toss things away. So, it’s almost completely mess-free!!!
  2. Chainmaille jewelry aren’t difficult to alterresize. If I happen to dislike an aspect of my design, I don’t need to start over. [Unlike, for example, metal casting, soldering, & wire-wrapping] I can easily remove/extend/shorten/etc the part I don’t like and it won’t take me forever to do it.
  3. If I make some pieces I don’t like, I don’t need to throw them away. I can reuse their parts to create my next jewelry samples . (Less waste).
  4. I prefer my jewelry bold, chunky, sturdy, but not too uncomfortable to wear. This bold, dramatic, & chunky anodized aluminum chainmaille bracelet below, for example, is lighter than 2 tablespoons of sugar. No other materials & jewelry-making techniques can give me similar results.

These beaded gridlock byzantine bracelets, however, are made using (naturally distressed – with lemon juice & sea salt solution)  jewelry brass.

The metal contains some copper, so it’s not as hypoallergenic as my other bracelets, and approximately 3 times heavier.

~0o0~

I currently am preparing some exciting chainmaille jewelry tutorials, all of them can be completed within 1 hour or less, even by beginners.I will post some of those tutorials next Friday (November 16, 2012), the same day I will hold that chainmail jewelry-making kit giveaway. IMPORTANT:
Each Swarovski Crystal Pearl has two (2) tiny (pin-sized) DRILL HOLES on them.

{ For example, on pic #1, the visible drill holes are on the 4th pearl from the left and the 2nd pearl from the right }

But . . . I love how the gleaming crystal pearls look with the chain. Plus, the people who saw me wearing this necklace do not notice the drill holes because they are hidden from view by the handmade chain. So, I decided to go ahead and create this necklace.

Currently, I’m in the process of researching and sourcing some materials (gemstones, crystals, handmade polymer clay beads) that can be good substitutes to the Swarovski crystal pearls.

Please see picture #1 closely and you can see those drill holes: one on the 4th pearl from the left & one on the 2nd pearl from the right.

As usual, I make the necklaces using Blue Buddha Boutique‘s premium anodized aluminum jump rings; and the pearls I are Swarovski Crystal Pearls

The crystal pearls have tiny drill holes on them. They aren’t very visible unless you look really closely at them. And, if you want to hide the tiny drill holes, you can push/poke at the pearl a bit so the hole will be hidden by the handwoven chain that hold the pearls snugly.

I realize that some people might not be bothered by the tiny drill holes; but, since I cannot find any other material that gleam as beautifully (yet?), I decided to use them nonetheless.

I’m still looking for better materials, though

Stay tuned :)

.:: talent is overrated ::. my design process .:: a day in life ::.

angelica brigade joyz*k joyz indie designer at work dalent is overrated a day in life chainmaille chain maille sample making prototype

Thousands of jump rings in various sizes strewn all over the table

Along with ribbons, Swarovski crystal pearls, strips of fabrics, metal findings

I know I’d been sitting here for hours

Using 3 different sets of pliers, I’ve been weaving the jump rings, taking them apart, changing the sizes of the jump rings I used, re-arranging the placements and the length of the chain, crystal pearls, and the ribbons . . . and I’m not even half done.

Out of sudden I felt lightheaded. My hands started to shake . . .

It was then when I realized that it was 7 pm, that I had been working for 10 hours, and that I had not eaten anything all day . . .

Quickly, I decided to whip something up really quick before things get even worse

And when I was waiting for the water to boil . . . I couldn’t stop myself from thinking out ways to improve the necklaces I’m creating today.

It’s not uncommon for me to keep on working till very early in the morning . . .

And the moment I wake up, after I have my morning coffee (with lots of rice milk & cocoa powder), I usually go right back to work

Yes, I know that it’s not a very healthy lifestyle. It’s not a lifestyle I’d recommend to anyone else. I also know that it’s in my best interest to live a more balanced life . . . But, at this moment, there is nothing I can do about it.

There are a few plans in the works and I’m on deadline . . . But it’s another story for another day :)

Many people told me how lucky I am that I find something I’m passionate about and how fun it must be creating all these jewelry and headpieces. If they actually see the kind of life I lead, will they still think so?

All these fumes I inhale and all these ash that I need to clean up whenever I create silk floral headpieces / hair fascinator

Once in a while I accidentally stab my fingers with a needle and burn my fingers

And then, there are these natural byproducts of one’s decision to stay seated on the same spot while doing the things that require one’s close attention to detail: back pain, neck pain, dry eyes

There are times when I get stuck and no matter how much I try the pieces either don’t fit together and do not look the way I envision them to be. It can be very frustrating.

Yet, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I am driven by this impulse to create. Plus, the satisfaction that comes with the completion of each project is incomparable.

It’s uncommon for me to work longer than 14 hours per day

And … because of that, there are moments when I feel that talent is overrated. It’s the hours I spend doing, re-doing, fixing, and improving my works are the reasons I acquire these skills

Have you read or read about Geoffrey Colvin’s book Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else ?

How about Malcolm Gladwells’ “Outliers” ?

Here are some good summaries of the books’ arguments:

– Why talent is overrated http://money.cnn.com/2008/10/21/magazines/fortune/talent_colvin.fortune/index.htm

– Malcolm Gladwell – Outliers: http://wiki.dandascalescu.com/summaries/Malcolm_Gladwell_-_Outliers

It takes about 10,000 hours for people to start to be really good ad something

True, I one of the reasons I like to create chainmaille jewelry is because it comes very naturally to me. If I happen not to be not good at it or if I happen to dislike doing it, I would never spend so many hours practicing, learning new weaves, and designing my own chainmaille jewelry. So, perhaps, passion and natural aptitude are parts of the mix … but if I never spend those hours making numerous pieces of chainmaille jewelry and fabric accessories,  experimenting with new materials and techniques, and trying to figure out how I can make a better piece next time … I would not be able to make the things I am able to make today.

If I don’t spend enough time re-working this piece, this headpiece will still look the way the 1st version looks like …

There are still a lot of rooms for me to improve. There are a lot of techniques I want to learn and incorporate.

Alas …  I’m not a super human and I do need to have some rest from time to time … How I wish there are more hours in a day

Anyway, look at the time!

I need to go back to work. I’m trying to finish creating these 2 new necklaces today. I will upload their pictures in a few days.

Avant Garde Bracelet: Ms Sharp, v.01

I call this bracelet Rigmarole /// Ms Sharp

I name it after Thackeray’s anti-heroine Becky Sharp.

I currently am re-making this bracelet

I will upload the pictures of the improved version of it in a few days

Basically, it’s a simplified version of my other avant garde maille bracelet: Rigmarole /// Glorvina ( http://wp.me/p1KZjL-dD )

This version is sturdier than the Glorvina version, and doesn’t require multiple fittings. It’s adjustable and its upper part can be hooked onto any finger the wearer prefers

Here is the flat view of the bracelet

I noticed that many people will find this bracelet too chunky

So, I plan to make a smaller version of it

But, since this bracelet follows the movements of the wearer’s hand, I find this bracelet very wearable

I even wore it to work … and didn’t take it off when I was making more bracelets

Which will look rather different from this one and the Glorvina

To those who are interested to know the reason I named this piece Ms Sharp …

I sketched this bracelet while I was listening to Vanity Fair (I always listen to an audiobook whenever I am creating something)

Thackeray describes Becky Sharp as a petite girl with wheat colored hair and green eyes, whose beauty (especially in her later years) owes a lot to her extravagant adornments & make-up. She’s some kind of a con artist who manipulates men quite easily. She snakes into the lives of those men and their families. However, most women can see through her facade. Sadly for her, Becky is not aware that sooner or later most women find out Becky’s true motivations and realize that Becky is not their true friend.

The bluish green Swarovski crystal I used as the focal point of the bracelet reminds me to her eyes, and the gold jump rings represent her blond hair.

There is a part of the Swarovski crystal that’s a little exposed (as in not completely surrounded by the chain). This part of the design represents Becky’s failure to notice that there are a large group of people (many women) who can see through her pretenses.

I  see this bracelet as a reinterpretation of Thackeray’s memorable anti-heroine

I infused Becky’s “essence” into the overall design of the bracelet which also is a little (wearable) sculpture

Avant Garde Maille Bracelet: ‘Rigmarole /// Glorvina ‘

It took me hours and a few dozens of  fittings to make sure the bracelet to look exactly like this, and to follow the contour & the movements of my hand

(And for those of you who wants to know how the bracelet looks like when it’s placed on top a flat surface, please scroll down :) )

This bracelet is actually very flexible.

This is how the bracelet looks like when it’s placed on top of a flat(ish) surface

The Dragonscale Chainmail

It took me a while to master this weave. But … persistence and patience pay off

By the way, the weave reminds me to this print. I’m thinking about creating another bracelet which colors will match this dress.
