Previews + Updates

I finally got a chance to photograph all the pieces I recently made.

I’m gonna have to select & then edit the pictures (to make sure the colors seen in the pics are as similar to the real items as possible).

Here are some more previews of the things I plan to list on my Etsy shop. Sorry for cropping them & making them extra blurry. That way, when the official color-corrected pictures are up, you’ll like the final results more :D

Simple but dramatic chainmaille bracelets. I’ve been wearing them the moment I finished making them.

And these are Art Nouveau inspired hair clips. They are made out of silk shantung.

It might be a while before I can list them on my Etsy shop. After all, there are a few more custom orders I need to fill & brand new pieces (for two upcoming photo shoots) I need to create. And so, there are many samples of my new designs (which I call first-pieces) I need to create by the end of this week.

It usually takes me twice (and some times three times) longer to create first-pieces. Sometimes, things that look good on my sketch pad don’t look as good in real life. And so, I will need to re-size, replace, add, or reduce some parts of those first-pieces. At the same time, I also need to figure out the best way to construct each piece to make sure that they will are easy to wear, durable, & drape the way I want. It’s gonna be another hectic & sleepless week~

~0o0~

Anyway, have a great week, you guys! I’ll try to post some more new things this Wednesday.

In the meantime, you guys can check some other sneak peeks of several other pieces that I recently made on Angelica Brigade’s Facebook page & Tumblr. I don’t upload the same pictures on each site anymore~ So, if you want to see them, you’ll probably want to check each site.

Till then,

My Current Favorites

Statement Necklace Black and Gold - Art Deco Inspired // Lightweight 3-in1 Accessory - Can also be worn as a headband & a chain headpiece

Yes, I made this piece myself. But, if I am unable to make it myself & see it in a shop, I’d purchase the piece in a heartbeat.

Although it’s a piece of a chainmaille jewelry, it doesn’t look like most chainmaille jewelry other people make.

I always chain maille technique to create contemporary-looking pieces that go together with the items I purchase from my favorite shops (such as Revolve Clothing, Saks Fifth Avenue, & Shopbop – I’m listing them alphabetically because I love them equally). I tend also wear the handmade accessories I create together with other designers’ pieces (my current & long time favorites include the timeless & dramatic pieces by Kenneth Jay Lane, Gorjana, House of Harlow 1960, & CC Skye).

You can say that most of my chain maille jewelry look like “mainstream” non-artisan jewelry, but that’s just the way I like it.

Let me tell you why I love this piece.

This necklace can complete many kinds of outfits. I’ve been wearing it at many different occasions. I wore it with Theory business suits, with my casual weekend clothes (usually, a black Only Hearts cami, a long cardigan, and either a pair of my favorite jeans, a mini skirt + opaque tights, or a pair of Nike Tempo Shorts), with various little black dresses, & with a simple strapless maxi dress.

In this photo shoot, I paired the necklace with a Jen’s Pirate Booty mini dress (available at Revolve Clothing). I love this piece because I can wear it in many different ways:

  • On the shoulders
  • Off the shoulders [like this]
  • On one- shoulder [see below]
  • Strapless [see above]

You can wear this piece of jewelry in several different ways as well:

  • As a statement necklace
  • As a chain headpiece (the across the forehead kind)
  • As a headband

Like most other pieces of jewelry I create, this 3-in-1 piece is extremely lightweight. Sometimes, I even forget that I’m wearing them.

Anyway, this piece happens to be a part of a “capsule collection” which include:

  • A pair of (lightweight) dangling earrings
  • A coordinating bracelet
  • A cocktail ring
  • Another piece of dramatic necklace

How to [properly] open & close jump rings

Using flat nose pliers, hold the jump ring near its kerf / opening.

Then, gently & simultaneously, pry the jump ring open at a straight line

( Do not yank the jump ring, otherwise, you might end up with a bent jump ring )

To close the jump ring, gently wiggle the jump ring back & forth till you hear a click.

You know that you closed the jump ring properly if you can barely see the kerf/opening & the ring lays completely flat

~0o0~

Note:

1. Always use [at least one] flat nose pliers that are big enough to hold the entire jump ring. It will give you much more leverage & make it easier for you to open and close the jump ring at a straight line.

2. Do not use chain nose pliers. Its doesn’t provide you enough leverage & good enough grip to open your jump rings at a straight line.

3. Proper pliers that provide your grip with good leverage enable you to open & close the jump rings smoothly, no death grip necessary.

4. In fact, you shouldn’t grip the pliers too tightly because it can mar your jump rings and – overtime – can give you a wrists injury.

5. To make sure that your pliers don’t scratch the jump rings, you might want to cover the tips of your pliers with Tool Magic or masking tape.

By the way …

Do not close your jump rings this way as the ring will simply pop back open the moment you let the pliers go:

How I Create This Type of Knotted Chainmaille + Swarovski Statement Necklaces

handmade jewelry statement necklace chainmaille jewellery chain maille chain mail chainmail knotted swarovski fancy stone black gold angelica brigade angelicabrigade etsy indie designer bold sculptural unusual unique
~0o0~

STEP 1:  Coating my pliers with 2 thin layers of ToolMagic to make sure that the jewelry I create is 100% free of toolmark &/or scratch

STEP 2: Sorting the jump rings. (I set the imperfect jump rings aside and use only them when I am learning a new chainmaille weave).

STEP 3: Pre-closing the black anodized aluminum jump ringsas neatly as possible.

STEP 4: Opening the gold anodized aluminum jump rings.

STEP 5: Weaving the jump rings. (This weave is called box chain. I learned this weave from Rebeca Mojica’s  Book: Chained, but you can learn it for free by watching this YouTube tutorial or reading this free online tutorial instead).

STEP 6: Continue weaving the jump rings till I create a 40-inch or 101-cm chain

STEP 7: Attaching the Swarovski Fancy Stones and Knotting the ChainMaille

And yes … the 40″ or 101 cm chain only forms the center front part of the necklace

STEP 8: Deciding the length of the necklace

STEP 9: Create two more handwoven links (by repeating step 2 – 5) , twisting & linking them onto the center front part of the statement necklace, and connecting the ends of those links to a toggle clasp.

Ring counts: Approx. 20 rings per inch.

Thus, to create this type of statement necklace, I need to use more than 1200 pieces of jump rings.

The time I need to create this type of necklace: More than 12 hours.

I’ve made the Catrina necklace using many different materials in different sizes, colors, & lengths; but this one is special because it’s the very first knotted chainmaile statement necklace I’d ever created.

.:: talent is overrated ::. my design process .:: a day in life ::.

angelica brigade joyz*k joyz indie designer at work dalent is overrated a day in life chainmaille chain maille sample making prototype

Thousands of jump rings in various sizes strewn all over the table

Along with ribbons, Swarovski crystal pearls, strips of fabrics, metal findings

I know I’d been sitting here for hours

Using 3 different sets of pliers, I’ve been weaving the jump rings, taking them apart, changing the sizes of the jump rings I used, re-arranging the placements and the length of the chain, crystal pearls, and the ribbons . . . and I’m not even half done.

Out of sudden I felt lightheaded. My hands started to shake . . .

It was then when I realized that it was 7 pm, that I had been working for 10 hours, and that I had not eaten anything all day . . .

Quickly, I decided to whip something up really quick before things get even worse

And when I was waiting for the water to boil . . . I couldn’t stop myself from thinking out ways to improve the necklaces I’m creating today.

It’s not uncommon for me to keep on working till very early in the morning . . .

And the moment I wake up, after I have my morning coffee (with lots of rice milk & cocoa powder), I usually go right back to work

Yes, I know that it’s not a very healthy lifestyle. It’s not a lifestyle I’d recommend to anyone else. I also know that it’s in my best interest to live a more balanced life . . . But, at this moment, there is nothing I can do about it.

There are a few plans in the works and I’m on deadline . . . But it’s another story for another day :)

Many people told me how lucky I am that I find something I’m passionate about and how fun it must be creating all these jewelry and headpieces. If they actually see the kind of life I lead, will they still think so?

All these fumes I inhale and all these ash that I need to clean up whenever I create silk floral headpieces / hair fascinator

Once in a while I accidentally stab my fingers with a needle and burn my fingers

And then, there are these natural byproducts of one’s decision to stay seated on the same spot while doing the things that require one’s close attention to detail: back pain, neck pain, dry eyes

There are times when I get stuck and no matter how much I try the pieces either don’t fit together and do not look the way I envision them to be. It can be very frustrating.

Yet, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I am driven by this impulse to create. Plus, the satisfaction that comes with the completion of each project is incomparable.

It’s uncommon for me to work longer than 14 hours per day

And … because of that, there are moments when I feel that talent is overrated. It’s the hours I spend doing, re-doing, fixing, and improving my works are the reasons I acquire these skills

Have you read or read about Geoffrey Colvin’s book Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else ?

How about Malcolm Gladwells’ “Outliers” ?

Here are some good summaries of the books’ arguments:

– Why talent is overrated http://money.cnn.com/2008/10/21/magazines/fortune/talent_colvin.fortune/index.htm

– Malcolm Gladwell – Outliers: http://wiki.dandascalescu.com/summaries/Malcolm_Gladwell_-_Outliers

It takes about 10,000 hours for people to start to be really good ad something

True, I one of the reasons I like to create chainmaille jewelry is because it comes very naturally to me. If I happen not to be not good at it or if I happen to dislike doing it, I would never spend so many hours practicing, learning new weaves, and designing my own chainmaille jewelry. So, perhaps, passion and natural aptitude are parts of the mix … but if I never spend those hours making numerous pieces of chainmaille jewelry and fabric accessories,  experimenting with new materials and techniques, and trying to figure out how I can make a better piece next time … I would not be able to make the things I am able to make today.

If I don’t spend enough time re-working this piece, this headpiece will still look the way the 1st version looks like …

There are still a lot of rooms for me to improve. There are a lot of techniques I want to learn and incorporate.

Alas …  I’m not a super human and I do need to have some rest from time to time … How I wish there are more hours in a day

Anyway, look at the time!

I need to go back to work. I’m trying to finish creating these 2 new necklaces today. I will upload their pictures in a few days.

Angelica Brigade Knitted Maille Necklace Catrina

This is the bright aluminum version of the necklace I wrote about in my previous blog post (https://angelicabrigade.wordpress.com/2012/02/24/some-of-my-recent-works/ )

This necklace took me approx. 8 hours to create. It’s constructed using hundreds of saw-cut premium quality bright aluminum jump rings (which I got from http://www.bluebuddhaboutique.com) one ring at a time.

The bright aluminum jump rings are different from normal aluminum jump rings & they are very shiny.

To learn more about the jump rings I’m using, please feel free to check this site: http://www.bluebuddhaboutique.com/b3/faq/metals/difference-between-base-metals

~0o0~

The bright aluminum version of this necklace is much lighter than the bronze version.

Angelica Brigade Knotted Maille Necklace Catrina Bronze vs Bright Aluminum

On the other hand, the bronze version is stiffer than the bright aluminum one. Thus, the bronze version of this necklace looks more sculptural than the bright aluminum one.

Angelica Brigade Knotted Maille Necklace Catrina Bronze vs Bright Aluminum

Original design by joyz*k from Angelica Brigade original design by joyz*k from Angelica Brigade

Personally, I don’t really mind wearing a heavy necklace. But, I realize that it’s not for everyone.

Plus, bronze tends to oxidize quickly. So, when it’s not in use, it needs to be stored inside of a ziploc bag along with an anti-tarnish tab. The bright aluminum version, however, is much easier to maintain. All you need is to wash it with soapy water if it gets dirty.

Consider it as a draft#1 version

It needs some adjustments here and there but I’m quite happy with the overall design

Plus, it passed the durability test.

I tossed it to the floor a few times 50 times ( :P ) but it looks as good as new :D
