Angelica Brigade x Miu Vermillion Update

Though I’ve closed my Etsy shop and have been preoccupied with my other endeavors, I never stop creating handmade pieces. These past few months, I’ve been expanding my skill sets, creating numerous hand-stitched dresses, and different kinds of nail ornaments.

Below are some of pieces I created a while ago, made specifically for my fine art photography project that are going to be on view at Beautiful Bizarre currated exhibition at Vanilla Gallery: 『aestheticism~耽美~』.

Aestheticism // Vanilla Gallery // Tokyo Japan // 4 - 23 April 2016It’s an honor to be have my works featured along the works of the artists I’ve been admiring for years.

Can you spot my pseudonym – Miu Vermillion – on the list of featured artists? A more legible list can be found on the gallery’s website.

The curator of the show asked me not to share my completed works before the opening day. So, to give you some idea of what I was working on, I will share some behind-the-scene images and sneak peeks instead.

I created the dress using identical techniques I use when I make silk headpieces . . .

Apparently, I am allergic to the type of feather I used to construct the dress. Although I was wearing a wired surgical mask, I had to take numerous sneezing and coughing breaks which slowed my progress quite significantly.

Because creating the nail ornaments involves numerous messy steps, I didn’t dare to take snapshots of my working process because I don’t want to ruin or stain the surface of my phone and touch screen. May be, someday I will ask someone to photograph the working process for me.

Sculptural Jewelry, Contemporary Beadwork, and Jewelry Making

angelica-brigade_sculptural-geometric-contemporary-avant-garde-metallic-beads-ring_unusual-jewelry_unique-handmade-jewellery_accessories (2)

I’ve been obsessed with learning to create sculptural beadwork jewelry.

Ever since I received my copy of Kate McKinnon‘s Contemporary Geometric Beadwork, I’ve been spending most of my free time learning the basic principles taught in the book and adapting them so I can create my own designs.

angelica-brigade_sculptural-geometric-contemporary-avant-garde-metallic-beads-ring_unusual-jewelry_unique-handmade-jewellery_accessories (1)

Here’s an example:

I started by learning to create the triangular ring you can see on my index finger. Then, using the principles I learned by creating the simple ring, I created a more dramatic ring you can see on my ring ringer.

I also went a step further . . .

To make the ring extra shiny and rock-solid, I decided to glaze the ring

angelica-brigade_sculptural-geometric-contemporary-avant-garde-metallic-beads-ring_unusual-jewelry_unique-handmade-jewellery_accessories (6)

After that, using the same basic (but modified) principle and using different kinds of beads, I ended up creating this bracelet.

I’m still not 100% happy with it. So, I’m going to spend some time improving it.

You can see my behind the scene and work-in-progress pictures in my Instagram or my Tumblr photo blog.

angelica-brigade_handmade-sculptural geometric-avant-garde_bracelet_jewellery-jewelry_accessories_angelicabrigade

Anyway, when I was trying to finish making this bracelet, I could see the possibility of making mini top hats & tricorne hats using these same methods.  It’s gonna be a few months before I can create a decent beadwork hat; but, I’m so excited.

A Quick & Rather Brief Update

20130228-044559.jpg

Hi guys,

Sorry for the lack of updates/new blog posts~

I’ve been knee deep in work~

I’m planning to launch Angelica Brigade v.02 as soon as I possibly can, and it involves a lot of research & planning.

I’ve also been racing with time as I’m learning to operate (the newest version of) several 3D modeling & animation computer programs~ (As I’ve mentioned in a previous blog post, I’m collaborating with a writer to produce animation shorts & graphic novels).

And then, there’s my day job …

Plus, I’ve been creating several items I plan to enter into Fire Mountain Gems’ seed bead competition … making several some things for Mary Nine’s upcoming dance video … learning to create handmade lace … preparing several different jewelry-making & hair accessory-making tutorials … and making some other pieces for a big project that may or may not be put on hold.

Etc etc

Anyway, I’ve been posting many of my work in progress pictures on Instagram. That’s the best I can do at this time~

I don’t want to bombard people with the same photographs over and over again; so, if you want to take a look at what I’ve been making, feel free to find me on Instagram. You can also view those pictures by visiting this url >>> http://www.instagram.com/angelicabrigade

And, here are some pictures I didn’t post on Instagram~

20130228-044235.jpg

This one is a test piece. I’m using 16 gauge jump rings for this one & the chainmaille base of this beaded bracelet looks a little floppy when it’s not worn on someone’s wrist:

20130228-052112.jpg
Not like its original 14 gauge counterpart. I prefer this wire thickness better because the end result looks much neater/cleaner (and so, looks more professionally done).

20130228-052803.jpg

Well, that’s it for today …
But, I found several interesting gadgets I want to share/show you guys this weekend. Till then~

Moving towards a different direction: Creating simpler & more wearble pieces

Hey guys,

I listed two new bracelets on my Etsy shop today.

As you’ll see (below), these pieces are a lot simpler than my usual designs (such as this one).

They are also much more wearable in the sense that we can wear it pretty much anytime we want (even on a daily basis) with pretty much anything we want.

Timeless, aren’t they? They’ll never look dated, even a few years from now. And yes, they are lovingly-constructed to last for years.

Update (March 12, 2013): These bracelets are no longer available for sale)

Using Jewelry Making Kits to Learn New Techniques & Escape a Creative Rut

Update (04/17/2916): Blue Buddha Boutique is closing its door permanently. The link to their website (below) is no longer active.

Once in a while,  I make  several pieces of jewelry that look nothing like the things I usually make (my original designs)

Today, I made this dainty necklace using one of the jewelry-making kits I purchased in Japan a few months ago.

jump rings chain magatama beads

The kit is designed & produced by BeadsFactory, a division of the company that creates Miyuki Beads

I purchased it from ABC Craft – one of my favorite shops in Osaka :D

Anyway~~~

This piece isn’t exactly a chainmaille jewelry, but its focal points are created by interlinking numerous jump rings

jump rings magatama beads chain

Due to possible copyright issue, I can’t scan the whole instruction for you. But, I can share some of the new things I learned by making this piece with you [in a few weeks] by writing a tutorial on my re-interpretation or a variation of this piece.

My Japanese isn’t very good but the instruction is easy to follow.

The only thing I’m not happy about is that they don’t label the items they include in the kit.

This kit happens to contain no more than 9 different components; so it wasn’t bad. But, there are a few kits that contain more than 25 different unlabelled components. They drive me a little nuts because it usually takes me a while to figure out which piece is which, for example: which beads are antique black, matte navy blue, very dark gray, and so on . . . Especially because it turned out that the color they call Antique Black is actually very shinny [LOL!!!] Oh, gosh~ I had to ask 3 different people to help me to figure out which color was which :D

(We figured out which color is called Antique Black by elimination method)

But … in the end, they usually worth the effort.

Making things that are radically different from my own designs gets me out of my comfort zone.

Plus, through the process, I usually learn something new either by using some materials I never used before, using color combinations I never imagined before, or constructing things using the techniques I haven’t mastered just yet.

I prefer to buy jewelry-making kits than jewelry-making books. One of the reasons is: There are times when I cannot find some of the materials I’ll need to create some of the projects shown/written in the books, or … when I can find them, I have to buy them in the amounts that are waaayyyyy beyond what I need (i.e. one box per color instead of 20 pcs of each). In the end, I might end up with numerous boxes of beads I will never use. They will just clutter my work space & gather dust. What a waste~

“Experimenting with colors” + “And what I love about chainmailling”

I’ve been making these bracelets in SO many different colors these days (12 colors & counting!).

The chain maille weave is called Beaded Gridlock Byzantine. It’s invented by Rebeca Mojica, and a pdf tutorial of it is available in http://www.bluebuddhaboutique.com/b3/projects/Beaded-Gridlock-Byzantine

As I said in my previous posts, I make new chainmaille jewelry any chance I get. In fact, there are days when I chainmaille for 18 hours a day … Sounds a bit manic, doesn’t it? But, a piece like this necklace (below) takes more than 50 hours to create … And once I start creating something, only extreme exhaustion, previous commitments, & natural disasters can make me to take a break from completing the piece.

But, it’s more than just a compulsion. It’s the joy of creating beautiful things, of bringing them into the world, is what keep me going.

Many chainmaillers find chainmailling therapeutic. Many of them say that chainmailling help them to relax. Some of them compare it to knitting … how the rhythmic & repetitive movements calm them down etc etc … things that are akin to the things described/explained by this online article >>> http://www.knitonthenet.com/issue4/features/therapeuticknitting/

I, on the other hand, am not too crazy about anything too repetitive. So, I tend to keep my mind occupied when I chainmaille: I either chat with my friends or family or listen to audiobooks. There are a few classics (e.g. Jane Austen, Thackeray) that I re-listen every once in a while. But, more often than not, I listen to the latest legal thrillers, police procedurals, detective stories, & several different offbeat stories :D

Anyway, it doesn’t mean that I don’t LOVE creating chainmaille jewelry.

As a matter of fact, I’ve tried several other jewelry-making techniques … but I decided to stick with chainmailling.

Why?

  1. It does not require me to use any toxic chemicals, dangerous equipments, dyes, & fixatives. And, since I prefer to use professionally made jump rings, I don’t need to cut & toss things away. So, it’s almost completely mess-free!!!
  2. Chainmaille jewelry aren’t difficult to alterresize. If I happen to dislike an aspect of my design, I don’t need to start over. [Unlike, for example, metal casting, soldering, & wire-wrapping] I can easily remove/extend/shorten/etc the part I don’t like and it won’t take me forever to do it.
  3. If I make some pieces I don’t like, I don’t need to throw them away. I can reuse their parts to create my next jewelry samples . (Less waste).
  4. I prefer my jewelry bold, chunky, sturdy, but not too uncomfortable to wear. This bold, dramatic, & chunky anodized aluminum chainmaille bracelet below, for example, is lighter than 2 tablespoons of sugar. No other materials & jewelry-making techniques can give me similar results.

These beaded gridlock byzantine bracelets, however, are made using (naturally distressed – with lemon juice & sea salt solution)  jewelry brass.

The metal contains some copper, so it’s not as hypoallergenic as my other bracelets, and approximately 3 times heavier.

How I Create This Type of Knotted Chainmaille + Swarovski Statement Necklaces

handmade jewelry statement necklace chainmaille jewellery chain maille chain mail chainmail knotted swarovski fancy stone black gold angelica brigade angelicabrigade etsy indie designer bold sculptural unusual unique
~0o0~

STEP 1:  Coating my pliers with 2 thin layers of ToolMagic to make sure that the jewelry I create is 100% free of toolmark &/or scratch

STEP 2: Sorting the jump rings. (I set the imperfect jump rings aside and use only them when I am learning a new chainmaille weave).

STEP 3: Pre-closing the black anodized aluminum jump ringsas neatly as possible.

STEP 4: Opening the gold anodized aluminum jump rings.

STEP 5: Weaving the jump rings. (This weave is called box chain. I learned this weave from Rebeca Mojica’s  Book: Chained, but you can learn it for free by watching this YouTube tutorial or reading this free online tutorial instead).

STEP 6: Continue weaving the jump rings till I create a 40-inch or 101-cm chain

STEP 7: Attaching the Swarovski Fancy Stones and Knotting the ChainMaille

And yes … the 40″ or 101 cm chain only forms the center front part of the necklace

STEP 8: Deciding the length of the necklace

STEP 9: Create two more handwoven links (by repeating step 2 – 5) , twisting & linking them onto the center front part of the statement necklace, and connecting the ends of those links to a toggle clasp.

Ring counts: Approx. 20 rings per inch.

Thus, to create this type of statement necklace, I need to use more than 1200 pieces of jump rings.

The time I need to create this type of necklace: More than 12 hours.

A unusual, dramatic, timeless, and elegant statement necklace.

Looks great with almost everything: tank top or t-shirt and jeans, business suit, cocktail dress, evening dress, you name it.

Made with meticulous attention to detail, one jump ring at a time.

Lightweight for its size (62 grams / 2.1 oz. /  0.13 lb. )

Adorned with Swarovski Crystal Pearls which are “perfect replica(s) of genuine pearls. They are similar in weight and behaviour, adjust to the temperature of the skin and are resistant to rubbing, scratching, perfume, perspiration and UV light. Above all, they are the first pearls in the world with a crystal core and an innovative, silky smooth pearl coating.” ( Source: http://www.create-your-style.com/Content.Node/swarovski-elements/Crystal-Pearls.en.php )

An original design by joyz*k from Angelica Brigade.

*******************************

IMPORTANT:
Each Swarovski Crystal Pearl has two (2) tiny (pin-sized) DRILL HOLES on them.

> > > Please look at pictures closely and see whether the drill holes makes you like the necklace less < < <

{ For example, on pic #1, the visible drill holes are on the 4th pearl from the left and the 2nd pearl from the right }

But . . . I love how the gleaming crystal pearls look with the chain. Plus, the people who saw me wearing this necklace do not notice the drill holes because they are hidden from view by the handmade chain. So, I decided to go ahead and create this necklace.

Currently, I’m in the process of researching and sourcing some materials (gemstones, crystals, handmade polymer clay beads) that can be good substitutes to the Swarovski crystal pearls.

Please see picture #1 closely and you can see those drill holes: one on the 4th pearl from the left & one on the 2nd pearl from the right.

*******************************

Style name: Gwynn

Length: Approx. 22″ (56 cm)

This necklace is finished with a gold-plated pewter (tin-based alloy) toggle clasp.

The color of the chain: Yellow gold, similar to 22 karat gold.
The color of the Swarovski crystal pearls: Gleaming Light Grey

Please remember that monitors with different calibrations might depict colors somewhat differently.

*******************************

Materials: Blue Buddha Boutique premium anodized aluminum jump rings, Swarovski Crystal Pearls, hammered pewter (tin-based) toggle clasp.

The composition of the jump rings:
Aluminum: 96.6 – 98.5%; Magnesium 1.5 – 2.1%; trace amounts of Chromium, Copper, iron, Manganese, Silicon, Titanium, Zinc

Maintenance:
The color of the chain can be scratched by harder metals,. Oils from your skin may change the colors. Some of the color can be restored by washing the piece in soap and water.

As usual, I make the necklaces using Blue Buddha Boutique‘s premium anodized aluminum jump rings; and the pearls I are Swarovski Crystal Pearls

The crystal pearls have tiny drill holes on them. They aren’t very visible unless you look really closely at them. And, if you want to hide the tiny drill holes, you can push/poke at the pearl a bit so the hole will be hidden by the handwoven chain that hold the pearls snugly.

I realize that some people might not be bothered by the tiny drill holes; but, since I cannot find any other material that gleam as beautifully (yet?), I decided to use them nonetheless.

I’m still looking for better materials, though

Stay tuned :)

Rigmarole /// Glorvina Avant-Garde Bracelet ::: RECONSTRUCTED

Remember the bracelet I considered my best work in the year of 2011?

Joyz*K of Angelica Brigade Avant Garde Maille ChainMaille Bracelet Armpiece Rigmarole Glorvina

The moment I finished creating this bracelet/armpiece was the moment I started to see myself as a chainmaille artist.

Many people (even the people I don’t know . . . the ones who ask me about the piece whenever I wear it in “public places”) told me that I can definitely sell the piece . . . some store managers even told me that it will do well in certain stores . . .

But . . .

This piece, along with several other armpieces in the ‘Rigmarole Collection’, need to be custom-fitted.

In order to make sure that the bracelet to look the way it’s intended to look on the wearer’s hand, more than one fitting sessions are necessary

For that reason, unless I can find a way to reconstruct this bracelet in such a way that no custom fitting is necessary, I can never make the piece available for sale in my online shop &/or brick-and-mortar stores

It took me a while, but I’m finally able to achieve that goal . . .

The bracelet sits a little differently from the original one, but they look very similar and I like the reconstructed version as much.

Here are several before & after pics of the piece:
